Natural diamonds and lab-grown diamonds are chemically and physically identical but differ in their origins, production processes, and some perceptual aspects.
Origin and Formation:
- Natural Diamonds: These form over billions of years under extreme pressure and temperature conditions in the Earth's mantle. They are brought to the surface through volcanic eruptions and are mined from the Earth's crust.
- Lab-Grown Diamonds: These are created in a laboratory environment using advanced technological processes that mimic the natural diamond formation conditions. This process can take a few weeks.
Production Methods:
- Natural Diamonds: Extracted from the ground through mining.
- Lab-Grown Diamonds: Produced using two main methods: High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) and Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD). HPHT replicates the high-pressure conditions found in the Earth's mantle, while CVD grows diamonds from a hydrocarbon gas mixture at low pressures.
Quality and Characteristics:
- Natural Diamonds: Can have inclusions and variations in color due to their formation process. Each natural diamond is unique with its own fingerprint.
- Lab-Grown Diamonds: Typically have fewer inclusions and more consistent color, as the controlled environment allows for more precise formation. They are often created to be almost flawless.
Cost and Availability:
- Natural Diamonds: Generally more expensive due to their rarity, mining costs, and the lengthy supply chain involved. Availability is limited to the mines' output.
- Lab-Grown Diamonds: Usually 60-80% cheaper than natural diamonds of comparable quality. Their supply can be scaled up based on demand, making them more readily available.
Perception and Value:
- Natural Diamonds: Often perceived as more prestigious and valuable due to their natural origin and historical significance. They hold traditional value in the jewelry market.
- Lab-Grown Diamonds: Gaining acceptance but sometimes viewed as less prestigious. Their value can depreciate more quickly due to the ability to produce them on demand.
While natural and lab-grown diamonds are virtually identical in appearance and physical properties, they differ significantly in their origin, environmental impact, ethical considerations, cost, and market perception.
We offer a variety of stone types for our rings and fine jewelry. Each item is is clearly labeled within the description to tell you what stone type(s) are included for that item. We offer a large variety of natural diamonds, clarity enhanced natural diamonds, lab-grown diamonds, and moissanite.
Ideal cut diamonds reflect the light that enters the diamond in a precise manner to maximize sparkle. This is achieved by cutting the diamond with specific crown and pavilion angles. Ideal cut diamonds from Mikado must also have the highest grades (excellent) for polish and symmetry.
When purchasing a preset ring from our collection, our jewelers hand-pick the stone to ensure it has maximum brilliance.
All preset diamond rings come with an independent gemological grading report.
We have partnered with several strategic diamond and jewelry manufactures to bring the best value to our customers. We currently offer diamonds with GIA, AGS, IGI, AGI, EGL, IGL and GIE certifications. The certificate details, if available, will be listed for each individual diamond or ring.
An appraisal is a written estimate of the approximate retail replacement value of an item described. They can be used for insurance purposes and should be updated every 5 years.
